Can I Keep My Existing Cox Alarm System?

Many Cox Homelife installations used Honeywell VISTA control panels. A working, compatible VISTA-20P can often continue to operate with its hardwired contacts, motions, sirens and standard wired keypads after a professional communicator upgrade. We verify the actual panel model, sensor wiring, power, battery and programming before quoting a takeover.

Keep compatible wired sensors

Door contacts, window contacts and other hardwired zones can often remain in service after testing.

Replace the communicator

A compatible Alarm.com cellular communicator may allow professional monitoring and app control without Cox service. Equipment and feature compatibility must be confirmed.

Test every zone

We verify AC power, backup battery, sensor reporting, entry delays, central station signals and user operation before handoff.

What Can Be Reused — And What Usually Cannot?

  • Often reusable: VISTA-20P control board, compatible hardwired sensors, standard Honeywell wired keypads, and suitable siren hardware.
  • Needs evaluation: Honeywell 5800-series wireless sensors, zone expanders, smoke detectors and existing backup battery.
  • Not automatically reusable: Cox-branded touchscreen interfaces, cameras, doorbells, proprietary hubs and smart-home devices. Each item needs a compatibility check.

Never assume a device is compatible solely because it was installed by Cox. Life-safety devices and alarm reporting must be tested individually.

Vista 20P Takeover vs. New IQ Panel 5

Keep the VISTA-20P

Often the lower-disruption option when existing wiring and keypads are in good condition. Add a compatible cellular communicator for eligible Alarm.com service.

Upgrade to IQ Panel 5

A modern touchscreen may be appropriate when you want new wireless devices or different keypad capabilities. Wired zones require a compatible takeover module; wireless reuse is model-dependent.

Honeywell VISTA-20P Takeover FAQs

Can I reuse my VISTA-20P after Cox Homelife ended?

Often yes, if the panel is functional and compatible with the selected communicator. A technician must confirm the model and test the system.

Will my existing wired keypads still work?

Compatible standard Honeywell wired keypads can often remain. Cox-branded touchscreens generally should not be assumed compatible.

Will my existing wireless sensors work?

Some Honeywell 5800-series devices may work with suitable receivers and configuration. Cox-specific wireless devices require individual verification.

Can I control the alarm from my phone?

With a supported communicator and eligible Alarm.com plan, remote arming and disarming may be available.

Does cellular alarm monitoring need Cox internet?

A properly configured cellular communicator can send alarm signals without relying on Cox home internet. Some optional smart-home features may use Wi-Fi.

Do I need a new battery?

Not always. We check AC power and the backup battery and recommend replacement if the battery is weak or defective.

Can I keep Cox cameras and touchscreen?

These devices are not automatically compatible with Alarm.com. We can quote replacement cameras or a modern touchscreen if desired.

How much does a VISTA-20P takeover cost?

Qualifying Cox takeovers may be eligible for the plans above. Additional repairs, sensors or a panel replacement are quoted separately.
